Roulette History
Roulette’s history have had many interesting legends, more about its origin. Roulette is a French word, hence it has a French origin. The definition of roulette is “small wheel”. The first legend was Blaise Pascal, in the attempt to find the perpetual motion, developed a big wheel. Blaise Pascal was a scientist then, and dubbed as the father of roulette.
The big wheel was made for his experiments, before one of his peers had a good idea. The idea was to toss a small object and see where it landed in the big wheel which was divided into segments. Hence, Pascal and his friends began to use the wheel to gamble.
Another legend is more of the religious and devilish connotation. It was said that Francois Blanc, who opened the first casinos in Monte Carlo, supposedly bargained with the devil to obtain the secrets of roulette, to win playing roulette. The legend is based on the fact of the roulette wheel itself. By adding the 37 numbers, 0 to 36, the sum of it is 666. This number is also known as the “Number of the Beast”.
Roulette had evolved from the time of its origin, and today’s common roulette that is in casinos made its debut in 1765 in Paris. French emigrants brought along this game to the United States of America, and surprisingly, the first American casino sprung up in New Orleans in 1800. Gradually, casinos began springing up over the whole country and in 1861, a casino was opened in Monaco and that became the hub of gambling businesses and casinos.
What is surprising is that Las Vegas was one of the last few cities to open casinos with roulette, though today, it is still dubbed as the “Land of Casinos”, where it has taken over the role of capital of gambling businesses from Monaco in the 1900s.
During the first part of the 20th century, the casinos in Monte Carlo had different roulettes compared to the Las Vegas casinos. The Monte Carlo casino’s roulette wheel was the traditional single zero French wheel and Las Vegas casinos had the American double zero wheel. In the 1970s, the world saw the boom of casinos as they began flourishing around the globe.
Today, there are several hundred casinos worldwide offering roulette games. It is popular because of its simplicity, ease to play and thrill packaged all in a roulette game.
The double zero roulette wheel is mainly found in USA and South America, whilst the single zero roulette wheel is predominant elsewhere.
